Un poco de Historia:

        El single apareció en el álbum The Joshua Tree. One Tree Hill se editó sólo en Nueva Zelanda y Australia, en lugar del single In God’s Country. Se editó únicamente en formato 7” pero tiene la misma foto de portada que In God’s Country. La canción se llama igual que la colina volcánica más alta en Auckland y estaba dedicada a Greg Carroll, que se convirtió en el ayudante personal de Bono después de los conciertos de septiembre de 1984 en Auckland. Carroll fue asesinado en un accidente de moto y Bono y su esposa Ali, Larry y su novia Anne, y los miembros del personal Joe O’Herlihy y Steve Iredale fueron al funeral en Wanganui, Nueva Zelanda el 10 de julio de 1986. La letra ‘Jara sang his song a weapon, in the hands of love / You know his blood still cries from the ground’ se refieren al cantante chileno Víctor Jara. Cuando el dictador Pinochet derrocó al gobierno, Jara fue torturado cortandole las dos manos y haciéndole  tocar la guitarra hasta que se desangró y murió. Empezando con los conciertos en Uniondale, New Cork el 10-11 de septiembre de 1987, la canción fue añadida al repertorio de los conciertos. One Tree Hill ha sido tocada en directo por la banda de heavy metal Mortal en 1993 y puede encontrarse en su EP Intense Live Series Vol. 5 y en el promo Wired & Plugged In. El tema también aparece en la película Shifting Winds.
